On November 18th, 2012, Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronot, reported senior adviser to Barack Obama, Iranian-born Valarie Jarrett was secretly having talks with Iran’s head of the Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi and Israel expressed anger toward the White House for keeping Israel out of the loop.
Jarrett’s involvement in Iran is cause for concern for three additional reasons–two minor and one major. One minor reason is that she was born there. That should not automatically disqualify anyone, of course, any more than being born in the Soviet Union would have disqualified an anti-Soviet dissident. But Jarrett was born in 1956 to American expatriates in the aftermath of the CIA-assisted coup that deposed Mohammad Mossadegh.
The Iranian regime remains obsessed with the Mossadegh coup as proof of America’s innate evil–and for decades, some Americans have felt a sense of post-colonial guilt about it. That feeling may be particularly acute for an American born in the shadow of that event. The temptation to show contrition by acceding to Iran’s goals, as a kind of restorative justice, could well shape Jarrett’s involvement, and Obama’s approach.
The second minor reason to worry about Jarrett’s involvement in Iran is her political background. Her entrée into the world of left-wing politics in Chicago was through her father-in-law, Vernon Jarrett, a journalist with somewhat radical views. Jarrett spoke out against anti-semitism in the black community, for example, but also took anti-Israel stands, accusing pro-Israel Jews of “support of genocide” in the Lebanon War, for example.
Jarrett, despite her expatriate origins, has little experience in international affairs, and is said to manage Obama’s policies through a domestic political lens. If she was as involved in the talks as reports suggest, that could be a major reason for the president’s eagerness to sign almost any deal, even one the French rejected as too weak. In any other administration, she likely would have been ignored.
The Times Of Israel called the recent Geneva negotiations a facade, saying the Americans offered Iran a series of “confidence-building measures”. This year-long secret deal is what the Obama administration brought to the P5+1 nations, where this deal had been accepted buy the P5+1 nations, which include: the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany.
While France has expressed objections to the proposed terms, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fumed over the proposed terms, including the easing of non-core sanctions under an arrangements whereby Iran would still be permitted to enrich uranium to 3.5%.
Under the agreed terms between the six nations, Tehran will be allowed access to $4.2 billion in funds frozen as part of the financial sanctions imposed on Iran over suspicions that its nuclear program is aimed at producing an atomic bomb. In return, Iran has agreed to halt enriching uranium up to 20 percent for six months, but will continue to enrich it to 5 percent.
Iran’s current stockpile of 20 percent-enriched uranium – almost weapons grade – will also be diluted as part of the agreement. In addition, Tehran will build no nuclear centrifuges or seek to expand its nuclear facilities, agreeing to halt the construction of a reactor in Arak for the next six months.
However, in January 2014, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator said in a Persian-language interview today that there are important details about the deal between Iran and the U.S. and major powers in a 30-page document that hasn’t been made public. Now, hawkish American groups have called for the Obama administration to release the text of the agreement, but Araqchi’s claim about “nonpaper” text implies that Iran and the P5+1 powers have decided that certain elements of the deal to which they agreed should not be made public.
When the deal was reached at the end of November, the White House only publicly released its own fact sheet, not deigning to release the unofficial text of the communique from the conference (which was obtained by the media). That allowed the Obama administration to downplay, for instance, various ways in which the agreement weakened the international sanctions regime against Iran (the “fact sheet,” for instance, claimed only repairs and inspections of Iranian airlines would be allowed, while the agreement refers to supplying spare parts, which are often diverted by the Revolutionary Guard). Iran claimed that the White House’s depiction of the agreement was “invalid,” though their most strident objection was semantic: American diplomats argued that the deal didn’t recognize an Iranian right to enrichment, while Iranian officials said it did.
And now, as part of the “secret deal” that Israel claimed took place more than a year ago, president Obama has allowed Iran to sit at the Geneva II conference on Syria – another first. The second round of the Geneva II conference on the Syrian conflict opens Monday, Feb. 10 – this time with a seat at the table for the Iranian delegation provided by Washington, DEBKAfile reports exclusively. Washington relayed this abrupt turnabout from its ban last week on Iranian representatives to the Tehran delegates quietly attending the secret alternative conference taking place unannounced in Bern.
Permission to admit Iran to the Bern parley marked another major Obama administration concession to Tehran. For the first time, Iran delegates took their seats around an international conference table alongside the major powers with a say on political and strategic decisions for a critical Mid East conflict.
“Appearing before the House Intelligence Committee, Director of Intelligence James Clapper admitted that the agreement to dismantle the Syrian chemical weapons, reached last year in Geneva by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russia Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, had ‘actually strengthened Bashar Assad’s position… by virtue of his agreement to remove the chemical weapons.'”
In the space of a week, Washington has gone back on the forceful statement Kerry made at the opening of the Geneva conference on Jan. 16, when he said “as we get into this process, it will become clear there is no political solution whatsoever if Assad is not discussing a transition and if he thinks he is going to be part of that future. It is not going to happen”
The Obama administration is now forced to act on the presumption of a stronger Bashar Assad – as registered by Clapper, meaning that in order to be realistic, there is no option but to accept the Syrian ruler’s strong standing in Damascus and Tehran and the unavoidable conclusion that Iran is vitally instrumental to any resolution of the Syrian conflict.
Few people even in Israel noticed the telling comment made last week by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s special emissary to Tehran, Jibril Rajoub. He said after talking to Iranian officials that Tehran must be part of the negotiating process ongoing between the Palestinians and Israel, clearly speaking under the influence of Iran’s enhanced position in the conference on Syria’s future.
Now, reports are flowing from off-the-grid media that the Main Stream Media has been instructed to heavily condition the American people once again for a war with Syria. This time they will use a False Flag Attack on Americas most vulnerable infrastructure. An attack on our power grid blamed on Syria will for sure have Americans screaming for an Invasion. In November of 2012, there was a national simulated grid attack called GridExII 2013. It had been reported by national and local media, as well.
The Miami Herald reported the United States accusing Syria of deliberately delaying the surrender of its chemical weapons stockpiles and jeopardizing a tightly timed and costly international removal and destruction operation that narrowly averted U.S. airstrikes last year.
And just a few days ago, Iran had sent three of its warships to the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. An Iranian naval officer said a number of warships had been ordered to approach US maritime borders as a response to the stationing of US vessels in the Gulf, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. “Iran’s military fleet is approaching the United States’ maritime borders, and this move has a message,” the agency quoted Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad as saying. The voyage comes amid an ongoing push by Iran to demonstrate its ability to project power across the Middle East and beyond.
A top Iranian navy commander has stepped up threats against the US, vowing to sink America’s Fifth Fleet in the Middle East if provoked. “Iran’s military fleet is approaching the United States’ maritime borders, and this move has a message,” Rezayee, a senior naval commander, was quoted as saying. “The Americans can sense by all means how their warships will be sunk with 5,000 crews and forces in combat against Iran and how they should find its hulk in the depths of the sea,”
Will Obama, Kerry and Hagel do anything at all to let the Iranians know this is not a good idea? As Commander-In-Chief, how will Obama deal with the saber-rattling that has clearly taken a threat to the U.S. borders?…but so far, this administration has only shrugged at this show of force. With our military cut and slashed, spread thinly across the globe…
…leads me to believe, there is another “secret deal” not yet known to the American public.
